Apparently only about 40% of Australian businesses have an ‘online presence’. This doesn’t just mean that they don’t have a website but they also don’t have any social media pages such as Facebook or a Twitter account! So, what could be the reason for not going online for these businesses? I speak to a lot of business owners who are looking to take their business online and the 3 main reasons for not being online earlier are that they thought that they didn’t have the time, the budget or they didn’t believe it would have been beneficial to their business. Luckily the businesses I speak to are usually the ones that have seen the light and realised that a website is an essential tool to help grow their business. But what about the businesses that still don’t have a website? Let’s address each of the main excuses: 1. I don’t have the budget to build a website: You don’t need to build the next start off with a huge website. Start off small and keep it simple. You just need the basic information and a couple of pages to start with so your customers know what you do and how to contact you. Maybe even a contact form, image gallery to show off products and services, trading hours and a google map so your customers can find you easily. Just make sure that your website is scalable i.e. you have the ability to add as many pages and features as you need later on, as your business grows. If you don’t, you may have to start from scratch over again, and it will be more expensive in the long run. 2. I don’t have time to build or manage a website: People think that it takes a lot of time to build and manage a website. If this is your main excuse then you just need the right solution so it doesn’t take up your time. You should opt for a website package that allows for monthly management and maintenance of your website so you don’t have to. 3. I don’t think my business needs a website: Although it’s difficult to quantify how much business a website will bring in the door for your business you should know that the first port of call for any potential customers is the internet. They will either hear about you by word of mouth then look for your website or they will search for your services directly in a search engine.
